Western Union applauds Supreme Court decision

Go Global By Hikmet Ersek, Western Union CEO Jun 18, 2020

Western Union a global leader in cross-border, cross-currency money movement and payments, applauds the decision, issued this morning by the US Supreme Court, stopping the attempted shutdown of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

It is important to note that the Court ruled only that the process used for canceling DACA did not comply with the law, and not on the merits of the DACA program itself. Nevertheless, we are thrilled that the more than 700,000 ‘Dreamers’ the program protects will, for now, continue to be able to live in and contribute to the only home most of them have ever known.

The young people protected by DACA are some of our best: To participate in the program they must meet eligibility criteria, including no serious criminal history, being enrolled in school or with a high-school diploma or G.E.D., or serving in or being an honorably discharged veteran of the US armed forces. Many ‘Dreamers’—27,000, according to the Coalition for the American Dream—are frontline health care workers, needed now more than ever.

Western Union recognizes the vital role these bright, hardworking young people play in both our society and our future. We pledge to continue our efforts, along with our allies in this fight, to encourage Congress to finally provide ‘Dreamers’ with the permanent protection they deserve.
