Western Union Suspends Operations in Russia and Belarus

The Western Union Company (NYSE: WU) stands with the world in condemning the unprovoked and unjustified invasion of Ukraine. All of us share the shock, disbelief, and sadness around this tragedy and humanitarian disaster. Our hearts go out to the people of Ukraine and to our colleagues, customers, agents, and partners who have been impacted.

For the past weeks, our teams have been working to support our Ukrainian customers, including the millions who have been forcibly displaced, in the best ways we can. This includes donations to support humanitarian relief efforts and fee-free money transfer services.

We also have engaged in extensive dialogue with a wide variety of stakeholders in an earnest effort to arrive at the right decision regarding our services in Russia and Belarus. We have thoroughly evaluated internal and external considerations, including the consequences for our valued teammates, partners, and customers. Ultimately, in light of the ongoing tragic impact of Russia’s prolonged assault on Ukraine, we have arrived at the decision to suspend our operations in Russia and Belarus, effective March 24, 2022.

We join the international community in expressing sincere hope for a diplomatic and peaceful resolution. Meanwhile, our priorities remain the well-being and safety of our employees as well as continuing to support the people of Ukraine, including the growing number of refugees seeking safety.

Western Union Foundation Supports Ukraine Humanitarian Relief Efforts

The growing Ukrainian refugee crisis has displaced millions of people and threatens to forcibly displace millions more, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. In every refugee situation, we know those who are impacted are faced with grave uncertainty and insecurity and require immediate aid.

To directly support those affected by this humanitarian crisis, Western Union, its employees, and the Western Union Foundation have pledged up to $500,000 USD in aid to the people of Ukraine.

On March 5, 2022 the Western Union Foundation announced its first donation of $100,000 to International Medical Corps, providing medical aid and supplies, mental health support and protection services to those who have fled to Poland, Moldova, and Romania.

In Lithuania, the local Western Union Foundation has committed €20,000 to Lietuvos Raudonasis Kryžius – also known as the Lithuanian Red Cross – to fund emergency supplies. Western Union has provided €100,000 towards the direct purchase of blankets, first aid kits and portable phone chargers, supplies urgently needed by those who have been displaced.

Our hearts go out to all of those affected, and we will continue to partner with aid agencies on the ground to fund relief efforts where they can best provide support and security.
